Interview - Gothic & Lolita Ensemble
This translation comes from Lapis (flokati_san) @ Ongaku no Hon'yaku.
"Both lines of Moi-même-Moitié represent the clothing of men and women who are living in my ideal world."
What were your reasons to start up with a new fashion brand?
Mana: When I thought of establishing a new brand in the years of 97~98, there were already Lolita fashion brands out there, but there was no brand that had to do with dark- and sweetness, as far as I can say. Because I also love mysterious gothic things, I thought of combining them with the sweetness of Lolita and so I created what's called 'Gothic&Lolita'.
What's the meaning of the brandname?
Mana: 'Moi-même' means 'I myself' and 'Moitié' means 'half', so put together it says 'one half of myself'. At that time [when I thought of establishing a brand] I sometimes showed up as a woman and sometimes as a man, in other words, I have my ideal man and woman livinig within me, so that's why I divided my brand into two lines. Or, because this woman and man share the same body at the same time, you say that's another meaning of the brand's name 'one half of myself' as well.
In Moi dix Mois, the clothing of Moi-même-Moitié is worn by all the bandmembers. Has that been your idea from the beginning on?
Mana: Yes. Moi dix Mois reflects the worldview of Moi-même-Moitié. Moi dix Mois begins with letting the music and the incarnation of the world of Moi-même-Moitié unite. They both have 'Moi' in their name, which indicates the link between the two.
So, what is the meaning of Moi dix Mois then?
Mana: 'Moi' means ' I ' and 'dix Mois' means 'ten months'. Additionally, the latter also points at how much time a human in this world needs to be born. Moi dix Mois is different from Malice Mizer and for being my solo project, I needed to be born [and change] anew, that's why it includes the meaning of [re-]birth.
As present producer, in which ways are you involved with your brand?
Mana: As for now I do some imagination, tell the designers what I want to express and then I'll check a last time on the sample that's given to me. But, in the beginning, half of the products, especially the EGA-clothes and the accessoires, were almost all desgined by myself. Also, during the Malice Mizer times, I designed the stage outfits and I intended to continue to do so, but ... I obviously didn't (laughs). I have no idea about sewing and [sewing] patterns and that would have resulted in troubles. I just think of an illustration of the front of the clothes to pass on, but then for becoming finished, I also had to think of a good back-style and here I'd make an epic fail (laughs) [originally he say 'an elementary miss']. This wall was quite a challenge in the beginning, but I've learned some things.
From now on, what are you looking foward to? [what are your plans?]
Mana: Now we'll upgrade the mailorder-internetsite of Moi-même-Moitié so that the poeple from abroad can also order from there, and we'll also provide a selected shop in Paris with our clothes. That's why I'm thinking of how it'd be, if there was finally a direct shop [of Moitié] outside of Japan.
